Security precautions
(suggestions for Leighton Buzzard households)
1) Fit alarms they are excellent deterrents, which will often discourage
burglary attempts purely because of their presence or, if activated, scare
away the intruder.
2) Fit visible, key-operated window locks. Inexpensive and widely available
they are an extra deterrent. Remember: do not leave the keys in the locks.
3) Exterior doors should be fitted with five-lever mortice deadlocks.
Consider bolts for the top and bottom of each door for added home security.
Remember, if the doors of your home are not secure, then neither is your
house. Frames should be in good condition and the door no thinner than 44mm.
4) Lights can deter a thief. Timer switches can be used to turn on lights
and radios when there is no one home. An infra-red sensor which is activated
when something is in range can also scare-off a would-be intruder.
5) Its not just the house that you need to consider - thieves in Leighton Buzzard (or
anywhere else) love the garden too. Expensive equipment such as bikes and
lawnmowers are often stored in garden sheds and garages, many of which only
have a door fitted with a flimsy lock or sometimes not locked at all. Fit a
secure padlock.Naturally we can help
with all of the above.
Practical advice for continued home security:
1) Perhaps most obvious; lock up carefully
when you go out and remove all keys, even if you live in a quiet area and
even when you only leave the property for five minutes. Most burglaries
occur when a property is empty and, perhaps surprisingly in Leighton Buzzard many if
not the majority occur during the day.
2) Leaving a key under a mat or flowerpot is not a good idea. It's almost
the same as leaving a door or window open. Thieves know this trick well, so
don't make it easy for them!
3) If you're planning a holiday away from Leighton Buzzard remember to cancel your
milk and paper deliveries. Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your
home if you are going to be away for any length of time. Don't gives thieves
tell-tale signs! Keep valuable items out of sight when you are not at home.
4) Ladders left propped up against a property are an invitation to thieves.
Store them in a secure garage or padlock them horizontally to a wall.
